ARGYLE players and fans alike will be letting the train take the strain when they visit Cheltenham later this month.
First Great Western are putting on a ‘Green Pilgrim Special’ to take players, staff and supporters to Whaddon Road for Argyle’s npower League 2 game on October 29 .
The one-off non-timetabled high speed train service is a special service to transport players and the Green Army to the fixture.
And the return outing could turn into a party for the Pilgrims as it looks likely to be the first Saturday away game under new owner James Brent’s stewardship.
First Great Western’s General Manager for the West, David Crome, said: “We are a major employer in Plymouth and our staff are proud of our strong links with the city.
“Many of our staff are Greens fans and some of them suggested that we might be able to help out at the start of a new chapter in the club’s history.
“I’m pleased we’ve been able to make it happen, and I expect many of our staff will be travelling with the team and fellow supporters on match day.”
Argyle’s acting chairman Peter Ridsdale said: “We are chuffed that First Great Western are fast-tracking Carl Fletcher and his team, the Home Park staff. We’ve only got 300 tickets available for supporters though, and we expect them to prove very popular, so fans need to make sure they book now.
“All in all, it promises to be a fantastic experience, and, hopefully, could signal a day to remember – especially if we take the points.”
Chris Webb, chair of the Argyle Fans’ Trust, said: “This is the dawn of a new era for everyone connected with Argyle.
“What better way to start our journey back up the leagues than by rail? We urge all Argyle supporters to pack the train and the terraces at Whaddon Road.”
The outward-bound Green Pilgrim Special will leave Plymouth Station at 7.57am on match day, and arrive at Cheltenham at 10.58am.
The return trip departs at 6.10pm and sets down in Plymouth exactly three hours later.
Tickets are £18 for adults and £9 for under 16s, a huge saving on the normal price of around £60 for the journey.
Fans wishing to get on board the Green Pilgrim Special can do so by booking through First Great Western’s telesales line – 0845 071 1950 – or by buying direct at the booking office in Plymouth.
Supporters will need to have a match ticket to be able to purchase a train ticket.
There will be a buffet service on the train, both out and back, which will serve food and drink but no alcohol will be served to comply with football charter rules.
