Mike, a lifelong Plymouth Argyle fan and season ticket holder, was the BBC’s Chief Football Correspondent for almost a quarter of a century and was only the third person to hold this post after Brian Moore and Bryon Butler. His broadcasting experiences saw him attend eight World Cups, commentate on twenty-eight F.A. Cup Finals, work with ten full-time England managers and introduce Sports Report.
Sir Alex Ferguson once said of Mike “Radio commentary is perhaps the most difficult of all the media – some are too intrusive, some too opinionated and some too irrelevant with their views; Mike is none of those things. He has a warmth and quiet authority in his commentary – painting an accurate picture of the game and allowing his audience to enjoy it.”
The evening will consist of an interview with Mike and, after a short break, a question and answer session with the audience.
Mike is the author of After Extra Time and Penalties and a limited number of the book will be available to purchase on the evening which Mike will be delighted to sign. Mike is kindly donating the proceeds from the sale of the book on the night to the Argyle Archive. There will also be a raffle on the night with Argyle themed prizes.
The aim of the Archive is to acquire, preserve, maintain and display memorabilia and other artefacts associated with Plymouth Argyle Football Club and its antecedents. Research, collect, collate and archive facts, documents or other materials of educational, artistic and/or historical value, which shall be made available in the public domain for research and perusal purposes.
The Archive would like to thank Weatherproof Systems Ltd for sponsoring the evening.
