Military Wives Choir at Home Park

MEMBERS of the Christmas chart-topping Military Wives Choir are special guests of Plymouth Argyle at the Pilgrims’ New Year’s game against Torquay United.
Some of the Westcountry-based 100-strong choir, made up of Armed Forces spouses, will be introduced to the bumper Home Park holiday crowd at half-time of the January 2 match.
Argyle owner James Brent said: “As a club which serves a city with a long and proud Armed Forces tradition, we are delighted to welcome the Military Wives Choir to Home Park.
“Like the rest of the nation, everyone at Argyle has had their heart captured by these talented women and the brave cause they serve. We look forward to paying tribute to them on Monday.”
The Military Wives Choir was formed by TV choirmaster Gareth Malone for a BBC2 documentary earlier this year. The women performed a specially commissioned piece, Wherever You Are, at the Festival of Remembrance at London’s Royal Albert Hall in November.
Wherever You Are, which subsequently shot to number one in the charts, combines a poem compiled from letters to and from servicemen and their wives with music composed by Royal Wedding composer Paul Mealor.
It not only sold more than the rest of the top 12 combined, but also became the fastest-selling single since Alexandra Burke’s Hallelujah in December 2008, and scored the seventh biggest first-week sale for any single since electronic records began in 1994.
Proceeds from the sale of the single will go to two charities – the British Legion and the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association.
Argyle hope that the Military Wives Choir will be able to take part in their annual Armed Forces Day match coming up later in the season
